Client and event overview
When Massive Attack brought ACT 1.5 to Bristol’s Clifton Downs in August 2024, sustainability wasn’t simply part of the event. It was the whole point. Ethical Staffing was proud to provide Sustainability Ambassadors, with our teams looking after recycling points throughout the site and helping festival-goers dispose of their waste correctly. And this wasn’t your average outdoor show.
Putting Climate Action Centre Stage
ACT 1.5 was developed following years of collaboration between Massive Attack and the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research, which produced a science-led roadmap for decarbonising the live music sector.
More than 32,000 people attended the Bristol show, which put that research into practice on a huge scale. The event was powered entirely by batteries charged using renewable energy, offered 100% plant-based catering and introduced additional rail services and electric shuttle buses to reduce audience travel emissions.
Subsequent analysis found emissions reductions of 81–98% from power, alongside significant reductions from catering, equipment haulage and artist travel compared with the researchers’ counterfactual outdoor concert.
Sustainability Ambassadors on the Ground
With such ambitious environmental targets, what happened across the site mattered too.
Our Sustainability Ambassadors were positioned at recycling points, helping audiences understand where their waste needed to go and supporting effective waste separation throughout the event.
It’s a simple interaction that can make a real difference. Sustainability measures only work when people understand and engage with them, and having approachable staff on the ground helps turn an event’s environmental ambitions into everyday action.
The Outcome
Supporting More Sustainable Events For us, ACT 1.5 demonstrated just how closely event staffing and sustainability can work together. From recycling points and cup-return schemes to dedicated Sustainability Ambassadors, we’re proud to provide teams that help organisers put more sustainable event operations into practice. And getting to do that for a pioneering event, in our home city, with one of Bristol’s most iconic bands? Pretty special.
